Speech pathologist route to Australia: steps, costs and timeline (2026)
Trained overseas? We recruit speech pathologists into roles in Australia. See how we can help.Start your move to Australia
Speech pathologists aren’t registered by Ahpra: Speech Pathology Australia (SPA) assesses you, and if you’re a full member of the RCSLT (UK), IASLT (Ireland), NZSTA (New Zealand) or ASHA (USA, with the CCC-SLP) with 1,000 hours of practice in the past five years, its Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) costs A$825 and takes up to 7 weeks from a complete application, according to SPA’s MRA page. Everyone else, including Canadian speech-language pathologists while SPA isn’t accepting MRA applications from SAC members, goes through SPA’s four-stage Overseas Qualification Competency Assessment (OSQCA), which costs A$2,000 if every stage passes first time.
Every figure on this page comes from the body that sets it, checked on 27 or 28 October 2026. How we check.
Your route by country
For speech pathologists, the assessing body is Speech Pathology Australia. What you’re aiming for is eligibility for Certified Practising membership, which SPA says most Australian workplaces need.
| Where you trained | Who assesses you | Route | Who it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK | Speech Pathology Australia | MRA, through the RCSLT | Certified RCSLT members: the RCSLT says that means a year with them and the newly qualified practitioner (NQP) competency framework completed |
| Ireland | Speech Pathology Australia | MRA, through IASLT | IASLT gives a letter of good standing after one full calendar year as a full member and renewal for a second year, with no break |
| New Zealand | Speech Pathology Australia | MRA, through NZSTA | NZSTA full members, except those who graduated before 1993 |
| USA | Speech Pathology Australia | MRA, through ASHA | Current full ASHA membership with the CCC-SLP |
| Canada | Speech Pathology Australia | OSQCA | SPA isn’t currently accepting MRA applications from SAC members (update dated 2 April 2025), so Canadian S-LPs can’t use the MRA for now |
| South Africa | Speech Pathology Australia | OSQCA | South Africa has no MRA |
| Anywhere else | Speech Pathology Australia | OSQCA | Everyone not eligible for the MRA |
Every MRA route also needs a qualification from a member country, a letter of good standing and 1,000 hours of practice in the past five years. The MRA guide has each association’s rules, and the OSQCA guide walks through the four stages.
The order of steps
- Work out whether you can use the MRA. Check your association, your membership level, your 1,000 hours and whether you can get a letter of good standing. If you’re newly qualified, see when you can move.
- Check whether you need an English test. SPA exempts only an entry-level speech pathology qualification taught in English at a university in the UK, Canada, New Zealand, the USA or Ireland. Everyone else, South African graduates included, needs OET or IELTS results. The English tests guide explains the options.
- Apply to SPA. Either the MRA, or the OSQCA’s four stages in order: identity, qualifications and English; learning tasks; a portfolio of 5 to 8 case studies; and a recorded online interview. SPA strongly recommends applying for the OSQCA from your home country.
- Get your outcome letter and join SPA. The letter is valid for 2 years. Certified Practising status lets you provide services funded by Medicare and private health insurers, and registered NDIS providers and their staff need it to deliver NDIS supports. See what Certified Practising status means.
- Use the same outcome for your visa, if it needs a skills assessment. SPA is the assessing authority for speech pathologists in skilled migration, so one assessment does both jobs. It doesn’t decide your visa; Home Affairs does.
- Talk to employers, but don’t move first. SPA strongly discourages travelling to Australia to work before your assessment is complete. A Skills in Demand (482) visa needs an employer sponsor and at least 12 months’ full-time work experience (or equivalent) in the last 5 years. Visa advice should come from a registered migration agent; this is general information only. The order of steps guide compares this with OTs and physios.
Total cost
Official fees only, from SPA’s MRA page, SPA’s OSQCA page and SPA’s membership fees. There’s no Ahpra fee, because speech pathology isn’t an Ahpra profession.
| Item | Fee | Who pays it |
|---|---|---|
| MRA assessment | A$825 (covers up to 3 applications in 2 years) | MRA applicants |
| OSQCA stage 1: identity, qualifications and English | A$150 | OSQCA applicants |
| OSQCA stage 2: learning tasks | A$400 | OSQCA applicants |
| OSQCA stage 3: case-study portfolio | A$1,050 | OSQCA applicants |
| OSQCA stage 4: recorded interview | A$400 | OSQCA applicants |
| Certified Practising membership, 2026/27 | A$640 (Certified Practising status without membership: A$608) | Yearly, once you’re assessed |
| OET, if you need an English test | AU$587 (US$455 in the USA) | Only if your degree isn’t exempt |
Our arithmetic: A$825 on the MRA, or A$1,465 with a first year of Certified Practising membership. A$2,000 for the OSQCA if every stage passes first time, or A$2,640 with membership. Each OSQCA stage allows up to 3 submissions, and each one is charged again. Visa charges aren’t included: check Home Affairs. The move cost checklist adds English tests by country and pets.
How long it takes
- MRA: up to 7 weeks from a complete application.
- OSQCA: up to 3 weeks for stage 1 (from payment), up to 7 weeks each for stages 2 and 3, and up to 3 weeks for stage 4 (from the interview). Adding those up, SPA’s own assessment time is up to 20 weeks (our arithmetic), not counting the time you spend preparing each stage or any resubmission. You have 3 years from your first submission to finish.
- Visa: we don’t quote visa processing times. Check Home Affairs for the visa you’re applying for.
Pay
Speech pathologists are paid by degree level under the Health Professionals and Support Services Award. From 1 October 2026 the full-time year 1 minimum is A$1,308.80 a week at AQF 7 (bachelor), A$1,337.10 at AQF 8 and A$1,444.90 at AQF 9. Queensland Health employs speech pathologists at HP3 (A$83,824 to A$120,740) and senior speech pathologists at HP4 (A$132,689 to A$142,315), from 1 September 2026. Employers pay 12% super on top. A Skills in Demand (482) sponsor must pay at least A$79,423 a year (from 1 July 2026) and no less than the market salary rate. The speech pathologist salary guide compares these with the UK, NZ, the USA and Canada, and the take-home pay calculator estimates your pay after tax.
From my side of the table
I run a multi-site paediatric allied health practice in South East Queensland. Several of my own team trained overseas. I’ve done this move with them, not just for them. For where the work is, see speech pathologist jobs in Australia and paediatric speech pathology in Queensland.
Your next step
Check whether you’re a full member of an MRA association you can use, with 1,000 hours in the past five years. If you are, you’re looking at A$825 and up to 7 weeks; if not, plan for the OSQCA. The pathway check asks those questions in about two minutes and tells you the right next step for your country.
