Speech pathologist salary in Australia (2026), compared with the UK, NZ, the USA and Canada

The legal minimum for a new-graduate speech pathologist in Australia depends on your degree: from 1 October 2026 the award pays A$1,308.80 a week at AQF 7 (bachelor), A$1,337.10 at AQF 8 and A$1,444.90 at AQF 9. That’s different from OTs and physios, whose award minimum is set at AQF 7 whatever degree they hold. In the public system, Queensland Health pays speech pathologists from A$83,824 (HP3) and seniors up to A$142,315 (HP4), with 12% superannuation on top.

Every figure below comes from official sources, with its date: the award, government pay scales, public health job adverts, government statistics, SPA and the Reserve Bank. The take-home figures are a worked example. Recruiter salary surveys aren’t used.

The award: why your degree level matters

The Health Professionals and Support Services Award (MA000027) covers speech pathologists. From 1 October 2026, its Schedule B lists speech pathologist at AQF level 7, 8 or 9, and you’re paid by the qualification you hold. For occupational therapists and physiotherapists it lists AQF 7 only, so a master’s doesn’t lift their minimum.

Full-time weekly minimums, Health Professional Level 1, from 1 October 2026:

Above Level 1, the award’s higher classifications start at A$1,945.40 a week (Level 2.1) and reach A$2,499.10 (Level 4).

Three things to know:

Queensland Health: the public benchmark

Queensland Health employs speech pathologists at HP3 and senior speech pathologists at HP4. From 1 September 2026:

GradeAnnual salary
HP3 (speech pathologist)A$83,824 to A$120,740
HP4 (senior speech pathologist)A$132,689 to A$142,315
HP5 and above (specialist and managerial roles)HP5 A$149,360–155,647; HP6 A$165,822–171,483

Older adverts may still show 2024 rates, so check the current wage rates page. Other states set their own public rates.

If you’re sponsored, the floor is higher. A Skills in Demand (482) sponsor must pay at least A$79,423 a year (from 1 July 2026) and the market salary rate. The rest of the sponsor rules are in the visa sponsorship guide.

How to read it:

What the table doesn’t show: tax, pension or super, leave and cost of living all differ. Full-time employees in Australia get at least four weeks’ paid annual leave under the National Employment Standards, and exchange rates will have moved by the time you read this.

What you’d take home: a general example

General information only, not tax advice. This uses the 2026–27 resident tax rates plus the 2% Medicare levy, with no offsets, deductions or HELP debt.

SalaryIncome taxMedicare levyTake-homeWeekly
A$68,058 (award AQF 7, year 1)A$10,937A$1,361about A$55,759about A$1,072
A$83,824 (Qld Health HP3 entry)A$15,667A$1,676about A$66,480about A$1,278

Super of 12% is paid on top, into your super fund. Two catches for new arrivals: the ATO’s longstanding view is that working holiday makers are foreign residents for tax, who pay different rates; and singles earning over A$105,000 without appropriate private hospital cover may pay the Medicare levy surcharge (1% in the first tier for 2026–27). Check the ATO’s surcharge page for your situation.

Private practice

Private practices, including NDIS-funded paediatric practices, set their own pay, at or above the award minimum. Ask three things: the base salary, how many client hours a week they expect, and whether super is on top of the quoted figure or included in it. If any pay is linked to billings, get that in writing.

From my side of the table

I run a multi-site paediatric allied health practice in South East Queensland, and several of our clinicians came to us from overseas. On these numbers, a US SLP on the median will probably take a pay cut, and for UK SLTs it depends on band and setting. Good clinicians make good moves for good reasons, and those reasons are usually bigger than the salary line. For where the work is, see speech pathologist jobs in Australia.

Your next step

Before comparing offers, check two things: which SPA route you’ll take (the MRA or the OSQCA), and which AQF level your degree is likely to be paid at. The pathway check covers the first and points you to the right next step, including an info session if that suits you best.
