Moving to Australia as an Irish speech and language therapist (2026)
Irish SLTs who trained in Ireland can use the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with Speech Pathology Australia (SPA) once they hold an IASLT letter of good standing. IASLT issues that letter after one full calendar year as a full member and renewal into a second year, with no break in membership. SPA also needs 1,000 hours of speech pathology work in the past five years. The MRA costs A$825, and SPA aims to give an outcome within seven weeks of a complete application.
The IASLT steps, in order
| Step | What IASLT or SPA says |
|---|---|
| 1. CORU registration | Full IASLT membership requires CORU registration as a speech and language therapist |
| 2. New graduate to full member | New graduates can transfer to full membership after a full year and their new graduate competencies, signed off by a full member |
| 3. One full year as a full member, then renew | Only then can you request the MRA letter of good standing. Your membership must be unbroken |
| 4. SPA MRA application | A$825, covering up to three applications in two years. Up to 7 weeks. Outcome valid for 2 years |
If you’re a new graduate, that means at least two years from graduating before you can apply, often longer. Here’s the new graduate timeline across countries.
Why the SPA outcome matters more than you’d think
Speech pathologists in Australia aren’t registered with Ahpra. SPA says you must be eligible for Certified Practising membership to work in most Australian organisations, so your SPA outcome is effectively your licence to work. SPA strongly discourages travelling to Australia to work before your assessment is complete.
Visas
General information only; a registered migration agent should confirm your options.
- Working holiday (417): Irish citizens aged 18 to 35. Health and disability work is exempt from the six-month limit with one employer, under current rules, if your role falls within those sectors. Most employers will need your SPA outcome before you start.
- Skills in Demand (482): employer-sponsored; at least a year’s experience and a salary of at least A$79,423 (from 1 July 2026). After two years’ full-time work in the occupation within the last three years on a 482 with approved sponsors, you may be able to apply for permanent residency (subclass 186).
- Points-tested skilled visas: the 189 and 190 are permanent, the 491 is provisional and regional. Speech pathologists were invited to the 189 at 75 points in June 2026.
HSE vs Queensland Health pay
| Ireland (HSE therapy grades) | Queensland Health | |
|---|---|---|
| Staff grade | €45,514–65,068 (top point includes a long-service increment) | HP3: A$83,824–120,740 |
| Senior | €65,197–76,767 | HP4: A$132,689–142,315 |
| Effective | 1 June 2026 | 1 September 2026 |
The HSE therapy grades are the same for SLTs, OTs and physios. Convert at today’s rate. Australian employers pay superannuation on top of salary.
Healthcare
Ireland’s reciprocal agreement with Australia covers public hospital care and some PBS medicines only, not Medicare (MBS) services such as GP visits. Budget for private health insurance; on a 482 you must hold adequate health insurance as a visa condition.
What changes in the work
Many paediatric speech roles in Australia are in private practice, often funded through families’ NDIS plans, with reports written for those plans. The funding and paperwork are one of the biggest changes from the HSE. Ask every employer how they’ll support you through your first NDIS reports, and what supervision looks like in your first three months.
