Working in Townsville as an overseas OT, speech pathologist or physio

Townsville University Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for north Queensland, and Townsville HHS serves more than 250,000 people directly and over 700,000 for specialist care across a 150,000 km² catchment. Townsville also has its own regional labour agreement (the TNQ DAMA), and the Bureau of Meteorology’s tropical cyclone season (1 November to 30 April) applies.
I’ve worked in rural hospitals, and I’ve walked overseas clinicians through Skills in Demand visas alongside registered migration agents. Go in knowing the climate and the visa picture.
What’s distinctive about Townsville
- The north’s referral centre. Townsville University Hospital takes referrals from across north Queensland. The HHS runs 17 facilities: 15 hospitals and community health campuses (including Ingham, Ayr, Home Hill, Charters Towers, Richmond, Hughenden and Joyce Palmer) and two residential aged care facilities. Headcount was 7,699 in its 2024–25 annual report.
- A city of about 206,000. The Townsville council area had an estimated 206,260 residents at 30 June 2025 (preliminary).
- Category 3 regional. Townsville’s postcodes (4810–4818) fall in Category 3. Check your exact postcode on the Home Affairs page; a registered migration agent should tell you what it means for your visa.
- Cyclone season. The Bureau of Meteorology’s official tropical cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April, and Queensland averages about 3 to 4 tropical cyclones a season. If you’re moving with family, plan your arrival and your first lease with that in mind, and follow BoM warnings.
The Townsville DAMA
The Townsville North Queensland DAMA is a labour agreement run by Townsville Enterprise Limited. It covers Townsville, Hinchinbrook, Charters Towers, Burdekin, Mount Isa, Cloncurry, McKinlay, Richmond and Flinders, and can be used for 482, 494 and 186 visas.
The honest part: I haven’t been able to confirm whether its occupation list includes OTs, speech pathologists or physios. Don’t assume it does. It’s your employer who applies, in four stages: endorsement from Townsville Enterprise, a labour agreement request to Home Affairs, nomination, then your visa. Townsville Enterprise’s own guide and website give different endorsement times (five and 20 working days), so ask the employer where their request is up to rather than counting on either. If an employer suggests the DAMA, ask them to confirm your occupation is on the current list. The employer side is in our regional hiring guide. This is general information only.
By profession
Queensland Health pays on the HP grades: HP3 from A$83,824 to A$120,740 a year, from 1 September 2026. For sponsorship and applying, see working for Queensland Health.
- Speech pathologists: Townsville HHS has a clinical talent pool open for speech pathologists (HP3) and senior speech pathologists (HP4), for fixed-term temporary full- or part-time roles of various lengths, closing on 22 February 2027. The advert doesn’t say anything about visas or sponsorship. The advert asks for a speech pathology degree that makes you eligible for practising membership of Speech Pathology Australia. You’re not registered with Ahpra; SPA assesses you: A$825 through the mutual recognition route (Canadian S-LPs can’t currently use it) or A$2,000 across the four stages of the full assessment. See speech pathology jobs in Australia.
- Occupational therapists: register with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (Ahpra): A$250 application plus A$138 registration, from 1 October 2026, plus a non-refundable A$688 portfolio assessment first if you need one (it depends on where you trained; see Ahpra registration for overseas OTs). DAMA coverage for OTs in Townsville is unconfirmed. See OT jobs in Australia.
- Physiotherapists: assessment by the Australian Physiotherapy Council (Express FLYR A$1,742, FLYR A$3,490 or APEP A$8,321), then Physiotherapy Board registration: A$452 application plus A$220 registration, from 1 October 2026. DAMA coverage for physios in Townsville is unconfirmed. See physio jobs in Australia.
Rent
I don’t have verified Townsville rent figures. Use the Residential Tenancies Authority’s median rents quarterly data, which is based on new rental bonds lodged, and read renting in Queensland from overseas.
Townsville or Cairns?
Both are Category 3, and BoM’s tropical cyclone season applies to both. The big difference for OTs and physios is that the Cairns and Far North DAMA confirms it covers your profession; Townsville’s is unconfirmed. For all regions, see regional Queensland.
Your next step
- Speech pathologists: check whether SPA’s mutual recognition route is open to you, how long assessment takes, and whether you’d need sponsorship, before you look at Townsville roles.
- OTs: check whether your degree needs a portfolio assessment before OT Board registration, and whether you have work rights or need a sponsoring employer.
- Physios: check which Physiotherapy Council route applies to where you trained.
The pathway check below sorts that out in a few minutes, so you know what to ask a Townsville employer before you commit.
