Working in Cairns and Far North Queensland as an overseas OT, speech pathologist or physio

In Far North Queensland, the regional labour agreement (the FNQ DAMA) lists occupational therapists and physiotherapists, with an age concession to 55 for the 494 and 186 visas, but it doesn’t list speech pathologists (Cairns Chamber of Commerce occupation list, July 2026). Cairns is also the base of Cairns and Hinterland HHS, which covers 142,900 km², and the Bureau of Meteorology’s tropical cyclone season (1 November to 30 April) applies.

I’ve worked in rural hospitals, and I’ve walked overseas clinicians through Skills in Demand visas alongside registered migration agents. Far North Queensland is where the visa picture differs most by profession, so this page splits it out.

What’s distinctive about Cairns and the Far North

Cairns and Hinterland HHS’s international applicants page says: “We sometimes sponsor health professionals, but you can also apply for some visas yourself.” Treat that as something to ask about for a specific role. For grades and applying, see working for Queensland Health.

The FNQ DAMA in plain terms

General information only; a registered migration agent should advise on your situation.

The employer side is in our regional hiring guide.

By profession

Queensland Health pays on the HP grades: HP3 from A$83,824 to A$120,740 a year, from 1 September 2026. Private employers set their own pay.

Rent

I don’t have verified Cairns rent figures. Use the Residential Tenancies Authority’s median rents quarterly data, which is based on new rental bonds lodged, and read renting in Queensland from overseas.

Cairns or Townsville?

Townsville is the north’s tertiary referral centre and has its own DAMA, but I haven’t confirmed whether that one covers allied health. For every region side by side, see regional Queensland.

Your next step

The pathway check below sorts that out in a few minutes, so you know what to ask before you talk to a Far North employer.
