Physiotherapy jobs abroad: Australia compared with New Zealand, Canada and the UK

Trained overseas? We recruit physios into roles in Australia. See how we can help.Start your move to Australia

For a physiotherapist from the UK, Ireland, Canada or South Africa, Australia and New Zealand both have an express route: the Australian Physiotherapy Council’s Express FLYR (A$1,742, about 3 weeks) and the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand’s Express pathway (NZ$1,067, about 1–2 weeks). Canada’s route runs through credentialling and a national exam, the CPTE (C$2,500 in 2026 and 2027), and the UK’s HCPC route has no published timescale.

Bear in mind I place physios in Australian roles, so I’ve an interest in one column. That’s why each figure comes straight from the regulator or employer that publishes it, with anything old or missing called out.

What the table means in practice

The express routes line up. If you trained in the UK, Ireland, Canada or South Africa, both Australia and New Zealand give you their shortest route, and Australia’s Express FLYR has no exam. One difference: New Zealand’s Express pathway accepts a recognised pre-registration qualification, while Australia’s Express FLYR criteria for Canada, the UK, South Africa and Hong Kong require unrestricted registration held in the past 5 years (check Ireland’s directly with the Council). If you’ve only just graduated and haven’t registered at home, that difference matters.

Plan on Canada’s exam. CAPR’s Pre-Approved pathway covers physios educated in seven countries, including the UK, Ireland, South Africa and the USA, but its policy doesn’t say the CPTE is waived, so plan on sitting it. CAPR also estimates other costs: school documents about C$50–150, translation about C$40–75 a page, a language test about C$200–350, and an optional C$120 practice exam. Provincial registration fees come on top, and I haven’t checked them.

US physios have a narrower Australian route. FLYR only covers accredited programs in Texas, Massachusetts or California; every other US graduate goes to APEP. See the US physio guide.

Some figures need rechecking. APC fees are “as at 21 October 2026” and rose twice this year. The NZ physio advert closed before Health NZ’s 2.5% rise from December 2025. HCPC’s scrutiny fee page hasn’t been updated since November 2023. Check each on the day you apply.

Visas: Australia only

Visa rules here are general information; a registered migration agent can tell you which applies to you. Physiotherapist (252511) is on Australia’s Core Skills Occupation List, and the APC is the assessing authority for skilled migration. For the rules, see Home Affairs. Visa routes into New Zealand, Canada and the UK are outside this page; their governments publish them.

Why Australia, honestly

On public pay in A$, the HP4 grade at which Queensland Health advertised senior physio roles in October 2026 sits above all of the NHS and Health NZ ranges here. HP3, the grade below senior, starts above the top of NHS Band 5 but below the top of the NZ step-scale advert. The cost is the route: Express FLYR is short, but APEP is A$8,321 before Board fees and includes a trip to Melbourne.

I’m a physio myself. I’ve worked in community, paediatrics, inpatients and ICU, in government roles and in rural hospitals, and I’ve been a senior physio responsible for other clinicians. The physio jobs guide covers what the work looks like here.

Your next step

For physios: check which country your qualification is from and whether you’ve held unrestricted registration there in the past 5 years, because that decides whether you’re on Express FLYR, FLYR or APEP. The pathway check asks those questions and tells you what to do next, including whether an info session is the right first step. Costs are in the move cost checklist. OT? See OT jobs abroad. Speech?
