US physical therapist to Australia: the FLYR route, the written assessment and what else to know

Trained overseas? We recruit physios into roles in Australia. See how we can help.Start your move to Australia

If you’re a US physical therapist whose accredited bachelor’s or DPT was completed in Texas, Massachusetts or California, the Australian Physiotherapy Council’s FLYR route costs A$3,490 and includes a written assessment you can sit remotely, so no travel is needed (Council fees as at 21 October 2026). If your program was in any other state, the Council’s route for you is the full Australian Physiotherapy Entry Pathway (APEP), A$8,321, which adds a capability assessment and an in-person workshop in Melbourne.

In Australia the profession is called physiotherapy, and you’d register as a physiotherapist with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia. Everything below is from the Council, the Board and Home Affairs, checked on 28 October 2026.

Step 1: check your state

FLYR needs an accredited bachelor’s or DPT completed in Texas, Massachusetts or California, and registration without restriction in the state where you studied, held within the past 5 years. How that compares with Express FLYR and APEP is in Express FLYR, FLYR or APEP.

Two US-specific points:

Step 2: the written assessment

This is the step that decides your timeline on FLYR.

The Council’s information booklet sets out the number of questions and the duration; I haven’t been able to verify those, so check the booklet.

Step 3: FLYR stage by stage

StageFeePublished time
Eligibility assessmentA$1,1703 weeks from payment confirmation
Cultural safety trainingA$242Not stated
Written assessmentA$2,078Results by email within 6 weeks
FLYR totalA$3,490

You can do all three stages without travelling (the written assessment has remote sittings). Fees are paid per stage. The Council’s fees rose twice in 2026, so check its fees page on the day you apply.

Step 4: register with the Board

With the Final Certificate, you apply to the Physiotherapy Board of Australia through Ahpra (A$452 application plus A$220 registration, A$200 in NSW, from 1 October 2026). Route totals, including Board fees, are in the move cost checklist.

English. The USA is on Ahpra’s list of recognised countries for its English standard, which the Physiotherapy Board uses, so an education pathway rather than a test may apply. Check your pathway on Ahpra’s English language skills FAQ.

Pay

Converted at the RBA rate of US$0.7021 to A$1 on 27 October 2026 (our calculation):

Queensland Health HP4, the grade it uses for senior physio rolesA$132,689–142,315

The October 2026 listings showed physio roles at HP4 and HP5. Gross pay only; the physio salary guide compares the two in more detail.

Visas: general information only

A registered migration agent should confirm your options; the official rules are on Home Affairs.

For US tax, health cover, driving and pets, the moving from the USA guide applies to physios too, though it was written for OTs and SLPs.

From one physio to another

I’m a physio. I’ve worked in community, paediatrics, inpatients and ICU, in government roles and in rural hospitals, and I’ve been a senior physio responsible for other clinicians. If you’re a Texas, Massachusetts or California graduate, you can do the route without travelling; if you’re not, APEP is a bigger commitment, and it’s worth knowing that before you look at roles.

Your next step

For US physical therapists: check which state your program was in, and whether you’ve held unrestricted registration in that same state in the past 5 years. Those two answers decide FLYR or APEP. The pathway check asks them and tells you what to do next, including whether an info session is the right first step. All the routes are compared in Express FLYR, FLYR or APEP.
