Speech therapist jobs abroad: how Australia, the UK and Canada compare on recognition, cost and pay
Trained overseas? We recruit speech pathologists into roles in Australia. See how we can help.Start your move to Australia
If you’re a speech therapist looking abroad, the biggest difference between countries isn’t pay, it’s who recognises you: in Australia it’s Speech Pathology Australia (SPA), from A$825 through the Mutual Recognition Agreement, while the UK needs HCPC registration and Canada a provincial regulator. Here’s how the three destinations compare, from official sources, with their limits stated.
I recruit for Australia, so read this with that in mind. I’ve kept to what each regulator publishes.
The comparison
| Australia | UK | Canada | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who recognises you | SPA (speech pathology isn’t regulated by Ahpra) | HCPC registration is a legal requirement to work as an SLT; RCSLT membership comes after | A provincial regulator in every province (the territories are unregulated); SAC membership follows registration |
| Pathway if you’re overseas-qualified | MRA if you trained in, and are a full member of the association in, the UK, Ireland, the USA or NZ; otherwise the four-stage OSQCA | HCPC international application (four stages), then RCSLT’s supervised category: up to one year under supervision plus the OQP competency framework before certified membership | Varies by province. Ontario (CASLPO): professional master’s degree, credential assessment, at least 350 direct-contact practicum hours, and the Canadian Entry-to-Practice Exam |
| Exam | No written exam (the OSQCA ends with a recorded interview) | Not stated on the HCPC pages used here | Yes in Ontario: the CETP, run three times a year |
| Published cost | MRA A$825; OSQCA A$2,000 | Scrutiny fee £678.38 (one-off, non-refundable) plus registration fee £370.02 for international applications | CASLPO’s fees are in a PDF I haven’t verified |
| Published time | MRA up to 7 weeks; OSQCA up to 20 weeks of SPA processing across four stages | No fixed timescale; HCPC says it’s receiving “a very high number of international applications” | Apply at least 20 weeks before your exam date; decision about 5 weeks after the registration committee meets. CASLPO’s page gives longer times for some steps, including when a requirement isn’t met, so check it |
| Public pay, one line each | Queensland Health HP3 from A$83,824 (1 Sep 2026) | NHS Band 5 from £32,073, about A$60,929 (1 Apr 2026) | Job Bank median C$46.15 an hour, about A$46.90, S-LPs and audiologists combined (updated 19 Nov 2025) |
| Visa notes | Speech pathologist is on the Core Skills Occupation List; SPA is the assessing authority; 482 sponsors must pay at least A$79,423 | Not covered here: check GOV.UK | Not covered here: check the Government of Canada |
Conversions use the RBA’s rates on 27 October 2026 (£0.5264 and C$0.9841 to A$1). Full pay tables by band and grade are in the salary guide. The HCPC scrutiny fee page was last updated in November 2023, so check it before you pay.
What the table means in practice
Qualification level. Ontario requires a professional master’s degree. SPA’s standard is a qualification comparable to an Australian bachelor degree (AQF 7), specific to speech pathology, with supervised clinical experience. If your degree is a bachelor’s, check Ontario’s master’s requirement before you plan around Canada; SPA’s standard is set at bachelor level.
Supervision on arrival. The UK builds in up to a year of supervision through RCSLT’s overseas-qualified practitioner category. I haven’t found an SPA supervision requirement for overseas-assessed speech pathologists, so ask each Australian employer what they offer.
The MRA only gets you so far. Of these three destinations, only in Australia does the MRA outcome do the job you need, because SPA is both the professional body and the assessing authority; in the UK and Canada you still need the regulator. Why it isn’t a two-way licence, and SPA’s pause for Canadian (SAC) members, are covered in the MRA explained.
What about New Zealand?
I haven’t been able to verify the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists’ Association’s pathway for overseas-qualified therapists from its own site, so I’ve left it out of the table rather than guess. NZ pay is in the salary guide. Check the pathway with NZSTA directly.
Why Australia, honestly
Demand is strong: Jobs and Skills Australia reports job ads for speech pathologists and audiologists rose 78.8% in the five years to September 2025, and calls it a persistent nationwide shortage. Recognition has no written exam (the MRA is paper-based; the OSQCA ends with a recorded interview). The downsides: if you’re not in an MRA country, the OSQCA is real work, and unless your speech pathology degree was taught in English at a university in the UK, Canada, NZ, the USA or Ireland, you’ll need an English test at SPA’s level. Pay is a mixed picture depending on where you’re coming from; the salary guide sets it out. More in speech pathologist jobs in Australia and the OSQCA guide.
I’m a physio and I run a multi-site paediatric allied health practice in South East Queensland, where several of our clinicians came from overseas. Good clinicians make good moves for good reasons, and the right destination is the one where your recognition, your caseload and your life all line up.
Your next step
If Australia’s on your list, check whether you’re on the MRA or the OSQCA, and whether you have 1,000 hours of speech pathology practice in the past five years. The pathway check asks those questions and tells you what to do next, including whether an info session is your best first step.
