Senior and team leader jobs in Australia for overseas OTs, speech pathologists and physios
Trained overseas? We recruit OTs, speech pathologists and physios into roles in Australia. See how we can help.Start your move to Australia
A senior or team leader role is open to an overseas clinician in Australia, but for OTs and physios your registration type comes first: under Ahpra’s supervised practice framework, a supervisor must hold general registration and can’t be under supervised practice themselves. In Queensland Health, senior clinical and small-team management roles start at HP4, which pays A$132,689–142,315 a year (from 1 September 2026).
So the question isn’t only “am I senior enough?” It’s also “will my registration let me supervise on day one?” This page answers that for each profession. The grade ladders themselves, Queensland Health HP3 to HP8 and the private award’s Levels 1 to 4, are on HP3 to HP4 and beyond, and how your current grade maps across is on how your seniority transfers.
I’ve been a senior physio responsible for other clinicians, and later commissioned a hospital avoidance service and recruited close to 30 FTE using values-based hiring. I’ve been the one hiring, so I know what a good employer offers and what a weak one hides.
“Team leader” is a title, not a grade
What decides your pay and responsibilities is the grade or award level behind the title, so read that line of the advert first. In short:
- Queensland Health: senior clinical and managerial roles start at HP4 (A$132,689–142,315); HP5 pays A$149,360–155,647. The same grades and pay apply to OTs, speech pathologists and physios.
- Private employers on the Health Professionals and Support Services Award: someone who supervises other health professionals, assistants or students day to day is doing Level 2 work at least, whatever the title. The Level 2.1 minimum is A$1,945.40 a week full-time (from 1 October 2026). Ask which award level the role is classified at.

One example of a senior supervisory role, from outside Queensland Health: the Queensland Department of Education, which employs school-based therapists directly, has an HP4 Senior Occupational Therapist (Supervisory) role. Its role description asks the holder to “Provide leadership and clinical supervision to occupational therapists” and to plan and evaluate clinical supervision, and its mandatory requirement is current registration with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia. More on school roles: school-based therapists in Queensland.
Your registration decides who you can supervise (OTs and physios)
Australia’s supervised practice framework is shared by the Ahpra boards, including the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Boards. It applies where a registration type requires supervised practice, “such as limited registration and provisional registration”, and in a few other situations. Under it, a supervisor must:
- “hold general registration, or, where relevant, the appropriate specialist registration or endorsement with a National Board”
- not be “subject to supervised practice”, or hold registration with conditions or undertakings that could affect their ability to supervise
- sign an approved form and be approved by the Board.
There’s no fixed minimum number of years: Ahpra says the skills and experience needed “may vary according to the level of risk”. The framework has four levels, from Level 1, where the “Supervisor is always physically present and directly observes”, to Level 4, where the “Supervisor is not required to be present at the workplace”.
Two limits on what this means:
- It covers Board-required supervised practice only. Ahpra says the framework doesn’t cover “supervision of students completing clinical training” or “supervision of unregistered health practitioners”. Day-to-day clinical supervision in a team leader role sits with your employer, not the Board.
- It matters most in your first months. If you arrive on limited registration, you are the supervisee. You can’t be the Board-approved supervisor for anyone else until you hold general registration.
Senior physiotherapist jobs in Australia
The Physiotherapy Board says overseas-qualified physios complete the Australian Physiotherapy Council’s assessment to qualify for general registration; limited registration exists for supervised training and for postgraduate study. New Zealand-registered physios with a current NZ practising certificate can apply under Trans-Tasman mutual recognition instead, and are registered in the same category they hold in New Zealand. So if you come through either route to general registration, the supervision limit above usually isn’t what stands between you and a senior role. The role description is.
- Body: Physiotherapy Board of Australia (Ahpra), after the Australian Physiotherapy Council (or Trans-Tasman mutual recognition from New Zealand).
- Cost: Express FLYR A$1,742 (UK, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Hong Kong); FLYR A$3,490 (including some US states); the standard APEP route A$8,321.
- Pay: Queensland Health HP4 A$132,689–142,315; HP5 A$149,360–155,647. Private practice: the award’s Level 2.1 minimum is A$1,945.40 a week.
If you do supervise a physio on limited registration, the Board now asks for supervised practice reports using the Assessment of Physiotherapy Practice (APP) instrument, for arrangements approved from 28 January 2025. Route detail: Express FLYR, FLYR and APEP.
Occupational therapy team leader roles in Australia
OTs qualified outside New Zealand use one of three OT Board pathways, and the pathway and outcome decide your starting registration:
- Comparable Regulator pathway (UK and Irish degrees): you apply for general registration directly.
- Recognised International Qualification pathway (an exact match of institution, degree title and year to one of 30 listed programs from Canada, South Africa and the US): no portfolio assessment. Check the Board’s list before you assume a match.
- Qualification assessment (portfolio), outcome “substantially equivalent”: you apply for general registration directly, with no supervised practice.
- Portfolio outcome “relevant”: you apply for limited registration, complete 6 months of supervised practice with a competence assessment facilitated by the Occupational Therapy Council, then apply for general registration. For those 6 months you’re the supervisee, which rules out being the Board-approved supervisor for someone else.
- Portfolio outcome “not qualified”: you can’t register on that qualification.
One more detail that catches people: where the Board requires an orientation to the Australian healthcare system, it has to be one-on-one with an OT who has held unrestricted general registration for at least 3 consecutive years. A newly arrived OT, however senior at home, can’t give that orientation to a colleague yet.
- Body: Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (Ahpra).
- Cost: A$250 application fee and A$138 registration fee; A$688 if you need individual qualification (portfolio) assessment.
- Pay: Queensland Health HP4 A$132,689–142,315; HP5 A$149,360–155,647. Private practice: the award’s Level 2.1 minimum is A$1,945.40 a week.

Senior speech pathologist roles in Australia
Speech pathologists aren’t regulated by Ahpra, so the Ahpra supervised practice framework doesn’t apply to you. Speech Pathology Australia (SPA) assesses you, and you need to be eligible for Certified Practising status to work in most Australian organisations.
What’s different at senior level:
-
Your employer defines “advanced”. SPA doesn’t credential speech pathologists beyond entry level, so a senior speech pathology role is defined by its role description, not by an SPA grade. More on credentials beyond entry level: HP3 to HP4 and beyond.
-
Ask about new graduates. If the team takes new graduates, ask who provides their supervision or mentoring for SPA’s provisional requirements, and how that’s shared.
-
Body: Speech Pathology Australia (not Ahpra).
-
Cost: MRA A$825 (UK, Ireland, US, NZ; Canadian S-LPs can’t currently use the MRA); the full OSQCA assessment A$2,000.
-
Pay: Queensland Health HP4 A$132,689–142,315; HP5 A$149,360–155,647. Private practice: the award’s Level 2.1 minimum is A$1,945.40 a week.

How an employer decides your grade
Grading is the employer’s call, made against the role description, and your old title won’t be converted for you. What to bring and what to ask about pay points is on how your seniority transfers.
Your next step
- Physiotherapists: check which Council route matches where you qualified, or whether Trans-Tasman mutual recognition applies. It decides how fast you reach general registration, and so when you can supervise.
- Occupational therapists: check which Board pathway your degree fits, and if you need a portfolio assessment, whether it’s likely to come back substantially equivalent or relevant, because a “relevant” outcome means 6 months as a supervisee first.
- Speech pathologists: check whether you can use SPA’s MRA or need the OSQCA, and read the role descriptions for senior posts: in speech pathology the employer, not SPA, defines advanced practice.
The pathway check below takes a few minutes and tells you which route applies to you, so you know whether a senior or team leader role is realistic for your first job here or your second.
