Physiotherapist route to Australia: steps, costs and timeline (2026)

Trained overseas? We recruit physios into roles in Australia. See how we can help.Start your move to Australia

Overseas-qualified physios go through the Australian Physiotherapy Council first and then register with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia through Ahpra, and on the Council’s Express FLYR route (UK, Ireland, Canada, South Africa and Hong Kong) the official fees come to A$2,414: A$1,742 to the Council (as at 21 October 2026) plus A$672 to the Physiotherapy Board (from 1 October 2026), our arithmetic. New Zealand physios with a current practising certificate can apply under Trans-Tasman mutual recognition instead. FLYR countries (the Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden and three US states) take FLYR (A$3,490 at the Council), and everyone else takes APEP (A$8,321 at the Council).

Every figure on this page comes from the body that sets it, checked on 27 or 28 October 2026. How we check.

Your route by country

For physios, the Australian Physiotherapy Council assesses you and the Physiotherapy Board of Australia registers you, through Ahpra. The Council route depends on where you qualified and whether you hold unrestricted registration there.

Where you trainedWho assesses and registers youRouteWho it covers
UKPhysiotherapy Council, then the Physiotherapy Board (Ahpra)Express FLYRPhysiotherapy qualification completed in the UK, unrestricted registration with the UK regulator in the past 5 years, and currently able to practise in the UK without restriction
IrelandPhysiotherapy Council, then the Physiotherapy Board (Ahpra)Express FLYRA qualification from Ireland plus registration without restriction held in the past 5 years
New ZealandPhysiotherapy Board (Ahpra)Trans-Tasman mutual recognitionA current NZ practising certificate. Registration is granted in the same category as your NZ registration, and NZ conditions may also apply
USAPhysiotherapy Council, then the Physiotherapy Board (Ahpra)FLYR, or APEPFLYR needs an accredited entry-level qualification (bachelor’s or DPT) completed in Texas, Massachusetts or California, plus unrestricted registration in that state in the past 5 years. Other US graduates use APEP
CanadaPhysiotherapy Council, then the Physiotherapy Board (Ahpra)Express FLYRAn accredited physiotherapy master’s from Canada plus unrestricted registration in the province where you studied
South AfricaPhysiotherapy Council, then the Physiotherapy Board (Ahpra)Express FLYRAn accredited physiotherapy bachelor’s from South Africa plus HPCSA Independent Practice registration without restriction
Anywhere elsePhysiotherapy Council, then the Physiotherapy Board (Ahpra)Express FLYR (Hong Kong), FLYR (Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden) or APEPAPEP is for everyone else, with at least a diploma-level physiotherapy qualification

Anyone who doesn’t meet all of their country’s Express FLYR criteria is directed to APEP. The Express FLYR, FLYR or APEP guide explains each route’s stages.

The order of steps

  1. Find your Council route. Check the table above against your country, your qualification and your registration status in the past 5 years.
  2. Check the English standard. The Physiotherapy Board uses Ahpra’s English standard. Education taught and assessed in English in a recognised country (the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada and NZ are on Ahpra’s list) is one way to meet it, on the conditions the standard sets; South Africa came off that list from 18 March 2026. Otherwise, for tests from 23 April 2026, you need IELTS Academic 7 overall with at least 7 in listening, reading and speaking and 6.5 in writing, or OET 350 listening, 360 reading, 350 writing and 360 speaking. See the English tests guide.
  3. Complete the Council assessment. Express FLYR is an eligibility assessment plus 6 hours of cultural safety training, with no travel. FLYR adds a written assessment, which you can sit up to 3 times (each attempt is charged). APEP adds a capability assessment and a one-day clinical workshop in person in Melbourne.
  4. Apply to the Physiotherapy Board through Ahpra. Ask your home regulator to send a certificate of registration status straight to Ahpra close to when you lodge, because it’s valid for 3 months. If you’ve lived outside Australia for 6 consecutive months or more as an adult, you’ll also need an international criminal history check through an Ahpra-approved supplier.
  5. If your visa needs a skills assessment, apply to the Council again. Its skills assessment for migration accepts the Council’s Final Certificate as one qualification route; an Interim Certificate isn’t accepted.
  6. Look for work alongside, then settle the visa. A Skills in Demand (482) visa needs an employer sponsor and at least 12 months’ full-time work experience (or equivalent) in the last 5 years. Visa advice should come from a registered migration agent; this is general information only, and Home Affairs decides. The registration, job or visa first guide explains what can overlap. New graduates should read new graduate physios moving to Australia.

Resits cost A$2,078 (written), A$2,928 (capability) or A$1,903 (workshop). Visa charges aren’t included: check Home Affairs. The move cost checklist adds English tests by country and pets.

How long it takes

The Council’s times run from the date your payment is confirmed; incomplete applications and holidays cause delays.

Pay

The Health Professionals and Support Services Award sets the legal minimum: from 1 October 2026, A$1,308.80 a week (A$34.44 an hour) for a full-time physio in year 1, rising to A$1,689.50 from year 7. Physios are paid on the AQF 7 scale, so a master’s doesn’t raise the minimum. Queensland Health pays A$83,824 to A$120,740 at HP3, and its listings put senior physio roles at HP4 (A$132,689 to A$142,315) and advanced roles at HP5 (A$149,360 to A$155,647), from 1 September 2026. Employers pay 12% super on top. A Skills in Demand (482) sponsor must pay at least A$79,423 a year (from 1 July 2026) and no less than the market salary rate. The physio salary guide compares these with the UK, NZ, the USA and Canada, and the take-home pay calculator estimates your pay after tax.

From my side of the table

I’m a physio, and I’ve worked in community, paediatrics, inpatients and ICU. I’ve worked in most of the settings you’ll be choosing between. For where the roles are, see physiotherapist jobs in Australia.

Your next step

Check which Council route your country and registration put you on, or whether Trans-Tasman applies if you’re registered in New Zealand. That’s the difference between A$2,414 and A$8,993, and between about 3 weeks and several assessment stages. The pathway check asks those questions in about two minutes and tells you the right next step for your country.
