Moving to Australia as a South African occupational therapist (2026)
The biggest hurdle for South African OTs in 2026 isn’t your degree, it’s English. South Africa came off Ahpra’s list of “recognised countries” for English on 18 March 2026, so most South African OTs applying now need to pass an English test, even if English is their first language. The good news: graduates of eight South African programs, in the years Australia lists, can still apply straight for general registration with no portfolio assessment.
Is your degree on the list?
The Occupational Therapy Board of Australia’s recognised list for South Africa (page reviewed 11 March 2026). The institution, degree title and year of award must match exactly.
| University | Degree | Years of award recognised |
|---|---|---|
| University of Cape Town | BOT | 2006–2027 |
| Stellenbosch University | BOT | 2006–2027 |
| University of the Western Cape | BSc OT | 2006–2027 |
| University of the Witwatersrand | BSc OT | 2006–2027 |
| University of the Free State | BOT | 2021–2027 |
| Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University | BOT | 2021–2026 |
| University of KwaZulu-Natal | BOT | 2006–2024 |
| University of Pretoria | BOT | 2006–2024 |
Check the end years. UKZN and Pretoria graduates from 2025 onwards aren’t covered unless the Board extends the list. Free State and Sefako Makgatho graduates from before 2021 aren’t covered either, and Sefako Makgatho graduates from 2027 aren’t covered unless the list is extended.
If you’re not on the list
You apply for an individual qualification (portfolio) assessment, which costs A$688. If your qualification is found relevant, you complete six months of supervised practice under limited registration, plus a competence assessment, before general registration. You’ll need an Australian employer who can supervise you.
English: what changed in March 2026
South African education used to count as evidence of English for Ahpra registration. After a 12-month transition that ended on 18 March 2026, it no longer does: only applications lodged before that date could rely on it. Most South African OTs applying now need a test. Ahpra’s minimum scores for tests taken from 23 April 2026:
| Test | Overall | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 7 | 7 | 7 | 6.5 | 7 |
| PTE Academic | 63 | 58 | 59 | 60 | 76 |
| OET | — | 350 | 360 | 350 | 360 |
| TOEFL iBT | 91 | 22 | 22 | 23 | 24 |
The Occupational Therapy Council’s migration assessment uses the same minimum scores. Whether it still accepts South African education as evidence of English couldn’t be confirmed, so check with the OTC before relying on it.
Steps and costs on the fast route
| Step | Detail | Cost |
|---|---|---|

| Ahpra application | General registration, recognised qualification route | A$250 application + A$138 registration (A$130 in NSW) |
| Certificate of registration status | Your South African regulator sends it directly to Ahpra. Ahpra treats it as valid for three months from issue, so time your request | Set by the HPCSA |
| Cultural responsiveness and orientation | IAHA training and a one-on-one orientation with an experienced Australian OT | Varies |
| OTC skills assessment (for some visas) | May be needed for your visa; your migration agent will confirm | A$800 |
Visas
General information only; a registered migration agent should confirm your options.
- No working holiday option. South Africa isn’t a working holiday partner country, so almost every South African OT needs either employer sponsorship or a points-tested visa.
- Skills in Demand (482): employer-sponsored; at least a year’s experience; salary at least A$79,423 (from 1 July 2026). South African passport holders aren’t exempt from the 482 English test. After two years’ full-time work in the occupation within the last three years on a 482 with approved sponsors, you may be able to apply for permanent residency (subclass 186).
- Points-tested skilled visas: the 189 and 190 are permanent, the 491 is provisional and regional. How OT points work.
Pay
| South Africa (public service, Limpopo provincial advert, Oct 2026) | Queensland Health (from 1 Sept 2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Grade 1: R413,121 a year | HP3 from A$83,824 |
| Experienced | Grade 2: R482,499 (10+ years after registration) | HP3 up to A$120,740 |
| Senior | Grade 3: R564,822 (20+ years); Chief OT Grade 1: R598,260–656,661 | HP4: A$132,689–142,315 |
Convert at today’s rate. Australian employers also pay superannuation on top of salary.
Healthcare
South Africa has no reciprocal health care agreement with Australia, so you won’t be covered by Medicare on a temporary visa. Budget for private health insurance; on a 482 it’s a visa condition.
What I’d sort out first
- Check your university, degree title and year against the table above.
- Book your English test early, and prepare for speaking in particular: PTE’s speaking minimum (76) is much higher than its overall score (63).
- Because there’s no working holiday option, your first job is usually a sponsored one. If you need sponsorship, look 30 minutes or more out of the city centre. In my experience, sponsoring employers cluster in growth suburbs and regional centres.
